Generations Workshop Series 1 - Sue Montgomery - Classical Journalism Approach
How print media operates and dispelling myths of government and corporate control in Journalism. Followed by a discussion on how traditional journalism and newspaper writing has transformed with the use of online commenting and different social media platforms.

Sue Montgomery has a degree in Political Science from the University of British Columbia and and studied in Germany for two years at the height of the peace movement in the early 80s. She also completed a one-year Journalism Degree at Carleton University and then went on to work at the Toronto Star, the Montreal Gazette, the Canadian Press and Gemini News Service in London.
Sue has spent a large amount of time overseas and has reported from South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Rwanda, Thailand, Haiti and Cuba. In 1989 she covered the Velvet Revolution in the former Czechoslovakia and in 1990 she reported on the independence of Namibia.
In 1997 Sue returned to the Montreal Gazette as a News Reporter. She continued to write for oversea affairs, in particular with Haiti and covered the coup in 2004 and the earthquake in 2010.
For the past seven year Sue has been a Justice Reporter for the Gazette and has been working out of the Montreal courthouse, covering criminal and civil trials. The most recent high-profile trial was that of Guy Turcotte. Sue will also be covering the Luka Magnotta trial, which begins in March.
Sue has not only worked as a Journalist, but has also taught Journalism at the National University of Rwanda during the winter semesters of 2006 and 2007.
Sue has been recognized as an award winning journalist and received the Judith Jasmine Award in 2009 for investigative journalism and for her in-depth report on sexual abuse by religious brothers at College Notre Dame. She was also nominated for a National Newspaper Award in 2007 for her profile of Dawson shooter Kimveer Gill. In addition to this she has received awards for her work from Amnesty International, the Muslim Council of Montreal and Beyond Borders.
Sue is now married and has two kids and a dog and continues to work as a Justice Reporter for the Gazette. She loves to cook and play tennis and despite her heavy hitting reporting she has a great sense of humour.
