VIDEO: Rap Battle for Climate Justice - Teaser for Wednesday's Event
The Rap Battle for Climate Justice, a rambunctious fusing of radical politics, hip hop, and acting, is taking over the stage at Reggies Bar on Wednesday night with a stacked line-up of artists.
The video here (above) is a small taste of what to expect at the show.
Using the beat from Kanye West's Black Skinhead, a Climate Justice emcee, Shem G, takes on a Big Oil lobbyist, alias Bruce Payne (actually Jon Lachlan Stewart). The video is directed by Stefan Verna.
Things get going at 8:30 pm sharp on Wednesday at Reggies (Concordia campus, 1455 de Maisonneuve W), and the on-stage host is Meryem Saci of the group Nomadic Massive. Around 20 other artists will be stepping up to the mic through the night.
Donations will be accepted for Aamjiwnaang First Nation community member Vanessa Gray, who locked herself to the Enbridge Line 9 pipeline last December and faces serious criminal charges. For more information, see www.line9shutdown.ca.
Rap Battles for Social Justice is an ongoing series in Montreal, fusing political education on pressing issues (eg. gender, climate justice, austerity) with hip hop song-writing and performance.
This iteration is hosted by the Concordia Student Union (CSU), Climate Justice Montreal - Justice Climatique Montréal, Divest McGill, Divest Concordia, and Hip Hop Heads Concordia. It is also part of Fossil Free Week.
