CLIMATE JUSTICE MONTREAL SPELLS OUT “JUSTICE CLIMATIQUE POUR TOUS” PROTESTING THE RECENT APPROVAL OF THE LINE 9 PIPELINE REVERSAL
Montreal, QC: Climate Justice Montreal will display an illuminated message this evening at 9:00 pm at the corner of Cathédrale and de la Gauchetière Ouest near the Bell Centre. It has been one week since the National Energy Board announced their controversial decision to approve the flow reversal of the Line 9 pipeline, which means the arrival of tar sands oil to Quebec. Climate Justice Montreal is calling for resistance to tar sands development and for concrete steps toward an energy future that does not harm communities and ecosystems.
The National Energy Board decision-making process excluded directly impacted voices, did not consider the disastrous environmental impacts of the expansion of the Alberta tar sands, and ignored the structural failures of the Line 9 pipeline that were revealed during the consultation process. “It is clear that the National Energy Board decision on Line 9 does not exist in isolation but is connected to a wider plan for continued fossil fuel exploitation driven by industry and governments.” said Laurel Thompson.
A growing chorus of citizens’ groups, indigenous groups, and non-governmental organizations are speaking out against the tar sands. In anticipation of the Energy East pipeline application, Climate Justice Montreal strongly supports continued mobilization and direct action. “It is heartening to see people stand up for a better future,” said Lily Schwarzbaum. “We need to firmly say no to pipelines, to tar sands, to climate change, and to the legacy of colonialism. If we do not fight back now, the fossil fuel industry will continue its reckless exploitation of natural resources, imposing the consequences on historically oppressed communities.”
Climate Justice Montreal is a grassroots group that organizes in solidarity with frontline and indigenous communities directly affected by climate change. Through events, education and direct action, Climate Justice Montreal aims to highlight the voices of those least heard and most impacted, and emphasizes an anti-capitalist perspective.

la récente approbation du renversement de l’oléoduc de la ligne 9
Montréal, Québec : Justice Climatique Montréal affichera un message illuminé ce soir à 9hres pm au coin de Cathédrale et de la Gauchetière Ouest près du centre Bell. Il y a une semaine, l’Office National de l’Énergie (ONÉ) approuvait le renversement controversé de l’oléoduc de la Ligne 9, signalant l’arrivée des sables bitumineux au Québec. Justice Climatique Montréal en appelle à la résistance au développement des sables bitumineux et pour qu’un virage soit opéré en faveur d’un futur énergétique qui ne nuit pas au bien-être des communautés et écosystèmes.
Le processus décisionnel de l’ONÉ a exclus les voix des citoyens affectés , n’a pas considéré les impacts environnementaux désastreux liés à l’expansion des sables bitumineux de l’Alberta et a ignoré les déficiences structurelles de l’oléoduc de la Ligne 9 qui ont été révélées durant la consultation. « Il est clair que la décision de l’ONÉ sur la ligne 9 n’existe pas de manière isolée, elle est relié à un objectif beaucoup plus large pour l’exploitation continue du pétrole de la part de l’industrie et des gouvernements » a dit Laurel Thompson.
Un mouvement grandissant de groupes citoyens et autochtones et d’organisations non-gouvernemental dénonce les sables bitumineux. En anticipation du projet d’oléoduc Énergie Est, Justice Climatique Montréal supporte fortement la continuation de la mobilisation et de l’action directe. « C’est encourageant de voir des gens se tenir ensemble pour un meilleur futur,» a dit Lily Schwarzbaum. « Nous avons besoin de dire non fermement aux oléoducs, aux sables bitumineux, aux changements climatiques et à l’héritage du colonialisme. Si nous ne nous battons pas maintenant, l’industrie du pétrole continuera son exploitation imprudente des ressources naturelles, imposant les conséquences aux communautés historiquement opprimées.»
