Cinema Politica is thrilled to be partnering with the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics this summer at Concordia University in Montreal, where we will join in collaboration with their Encuentro 2014 conference and performance festival. Every two years the Hemispheric Institute hosts such a gathering, where according to the organization art meets politics through performance, dialogue, experimentation and collaboration. According to the Institute: “Each Encuentro brings together between 500 and 700 scholars, artists, activists and students to take part in a week-long program of keynote lectures, work groups, teach-ins, performances, installations, roundtable and long table discussions, urban interventions, visual arts exhibits, and hands-on performance workshops.”

The 2014 Encuentro’s theme is Manifest! Choreographing Social Movements in the Americas, and Cinema Politica has put together an exciting program of 14 incredible feature-length, mid-length and short independent works to screen during the conference/festival.

“Creativity, Colonization, Contestation: Indigenous Cultures and Peoples of the Americas On Screen and Stage” will run from Sunday, June 22 to Saturday, June 28, in Concordia’s J.A. de Sève Cinema, and admission will be by donation. The program consists of fiction, documentary and experimental works from across the Americas, with a special focus on Aboriginal artists working north of the 49th. This program is made up of exceptional works that engage with the histories, cultures, politics and manifestations of communities of artists, activists, and people living and working in the Americas. We have assembled these works in the spirit of collaboration that Encuentro champions, and as such we are confident that audiences will find both rich encounters on the screen and around the screening space.
