Nearly 200 people packed Café l'Artère in Park-Extension on Thursday, March 15 for the launch of the Marconi-Beaumont Coalition. The event brought together residents and organizations from the three neighborhoods of Park-Extension, Villeray and la Petite-Patrie to organise a collective response to the new Université de Montréal campus in Outremont.

Last year, the city of Montreal approved the construction of the new campus on the old CN rail yards in Outremont. Residents of the three neighbourhoods that form the coalition (all three share borders with the new campus grounds) are concerned about what impacts this new development will have on the area. This includes the cost of housing, levels of traffic and local jobs.

Montreal is holding public consultations this spring in all three neighbourhoods to get residents' input on future development, but many feel this program does not go far enough.

The Montreal Media Co-op spoke with coalition member and Park Ex resident Sacha Dyck about the coalition's plans for the coming months.
