On June 30th 2013, will mark 1 year since the election of Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. Since then there has been a complete regression of the basic demands made by millions of Egyptians less than two years ago in the January 25th Revolution. What we have seen from them has been continued neo-liberal policies and negotiations for a new IMF bail out loan of 4.8 billion dollars, to continued torture and repression. Like January 25th 2011 under the new banner of Tamarud(rebel) thousands of Egyptians are mobilizing once again for the main goals of the revolution Freedom, Liberty, and Social Justice.
I spoke with ,Atef Said a human rights attorney who practiced law and directed various research projects in Egypt from 1995-2004. He is the author of Torture in Egypt: A Judicial Reality (2000) published by the Human Rights Center for the Assistance of Prisoners and Torture is a Crime Against Humanity (2008), published Hisham Mubarak Law Center. Both organizations are Cairo-based. Said is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. His dissertation focus is the U.S. Empire and the Egyptian Revolution.
