Press Release
The Association québécoise de voile adaptée (AQVA) will soon host its annual Coupe du Québec, a sailing regatta for people with disabilities, on July 29, 30 and 31st at the Pointe-Claire Yacht Club, 1 Cartier Av., Pointe-Claire, Québec.
The Coupe is a competition where athletes from Montréal, Québec City, Hamilton, Ottawa, Toronto, and Kingston as well as states of New York,Vermont and Connecticut will test their skills as they race for the Coupe du Québec. The event has grown to be the most popular regatta forpersons with disabilities in Eastern Canada - this year, for our 11th edition, we expect nearly 25 competitors.
Thanks to specially designed boats and technology developed in Canada, everyone can sail independently no matter what their level of disability. Evenpeople with significant limitation, such as full- body paralysis, can enjoy the thrill of competition by using a straw system to control the rudder and the sails with their breath.
The AQVA is a well-established non-profit association whose mission is to provide sailing opportunities to people with disabilities in an accessible and welcoming environment. In addition to the rapidly growing program here in Montreal, our association boasts two other chapters in Quebec and we are continually seeking to recruit new participants across the province.
New this season the 2.4mR, a Paralympic class boat will be added to the event. Following a gracious donation from the Paralympic Equipment Fund, sponsored by Petro Canada and the CPC, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, the AQVA was able to acquire its first 2.4mR this season. We will be officially christening this newest addition to our fleet on Friday July 29th.
The media are invited to cover the Coupe du Quebec in order to show the accessibility of this exciting sport to all people, regardless of their levels ofdisability. We are also seeking support from the media to raise general awareness of adapted sport, invite those interested to come join our event, andto spread the word of our mission to potential financial sponsors.
