Film Screening: Matewan

(English w/French Subs) (135 min)

Matewan (1987) is an American drama film, illustrating the events of a coal mine-workers' strike and attempt to unionize in 1920 in Matewan, a small town in the hills of West Virginia, U.S.A.

The film is based on the Battle of Matewan (also known as the Matewan Massacre) which was a shootout in the town of Matewan on May 19, 1920 between local miners and the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency who had been enlisted to evict families living at the mountain coal camp. The ensuing gun battle left seven detectives and four townspeople dead.
