Liana Finck at the Blue Metropolis Festival

I ask the artist some questions about one of her works, A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New York

by Micah Langer

Liana Finck, based in New York City, is a multifaceted artist who has decided to coax her wild, free, artistic instinct into boxes. She combines wit and wisdom into comics that are poetic, insightful, and dead funny. She studied fine art and graphic design at Cooper Union College, and is a former Fulbright fellow. Her work can be found in the pages of Tablet, Lilith, The Forward, and The New Yorker, among other publications.  Check it out: lianafinck.com

Finck wrote and drew a graphic novel called A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New York (Ecco, April 2014), and it features a poignant interlude of her metal-plate etchings. It was inspired by letters from a famous advice column that was published in The Jewish Daily Forward, beginning in the early 20th century. She presented it here in Montreal on Sunday April 26th 2015, on the last day of the Blue Metropolis literary festival.

Afterwards, she sat down with me for an interview.  Joining us as was Kat Romanow, food historian, host of the Roots & Recipes radio hour on Green Room radio, and co-founder of The Wandering Chew, a series of Jewish pop-up dinners in Montreal.

This piece originally aired on CKUT's Tuesday Morning After, 28 April 2015
