Round Table on studen strike and freedom of the press

CKUT's Off the Hour: Red Square Report for Friday, april 20th

by Stéfanie Clermont

Round Table on studen strike and freedom of the press

live round-table discussion on the media and the student strike. There are currently almost 170 thousand students on strike across Quebec, trying to block the Charest government's proposed tuition hike of 16 hundred and 25 dollars. The strike is now in its 9th week, and at the peak of the strike, there were over 300 thousand students on strike. However, the mainstream media tend to consistently under-estimate numbers, and offer condescending depictions of students and their demands. In the last few weeks, a number of journalists have been either arrested or beaten by police. Today's discussions will look at this mainstream media coverage, some alternatives, and press freedom, or lack there-of, in Quebec.

and Laith Marouf, a CKUT programmer and also works for CUTV at Concordia.
