This interview was conducted during the Women's Worlds 2011 Conference in Ottawa that took place in Ottawa from July 3 to July 7 under the theme: "Inclusions, exclusions, and seclusions: Living in a globalized world". Many sessions were devoted to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in a global world.
The interview starts by explaining what tools the UN uses to promote women's empowerment in the Arab/ Muslim world. Then it deals with the challenges women face to reach gender equality, the underestimated role they play in shaping the political and social landscape of their countries and what other women in Canada and the West should/could do to support them.
Our guest speaker on these issues is Ms Jocelyne Talbot, Senior Gender Advisor for the UN Development program. She is currently stationed in Prishtina, Kosovo.
For the last 25 years Ms Talbot has been working tirelessly in the Middle-East and Africa where she intervened in 18 Arab/Muslim countries. She was stationed in Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, and Yemen.
