Le CPQ utilise un indicateur « incomplet et archaïque » pour mes
MONTRÉAL, 31 août 2011 – Alors que des dizaines de pays et des organisations internationales remettent en question l’usage du PIB pour mesurer la prospérité, le Conseil du patronat du Québec (CPQ) préfère volontairement ne regarder qu’une partie de la réalité socio-économique du Québec en en faisant l’indicateur-phare de son Bulletin de la prospérité 2011. Dans une brochure publiée aujourd’hui, l’Institut de recherche et d’informations socio-économiques (IRIS) montre que cette mesure comporte de nombreuses lacunes, pourtant connues depuis plusieurs années.

Depuis 2007, articule publie le Circuit d’art Mile End, une carte qui présente les centres d’artistes, galeries et autres lieux d'intérêt artistique et culturel localisés dans le quartier du Mile-End où se situe le centre. Dans le cadre de la troisième édition de la carte, articule convie ses concitoyens, les résidents du Mile-End, à un exercice de réflexion et de création collectives autour de leur quartier. Se fondant sur des notions de cartographie sociale, le centre propose une série d’ateliers axés sur la réflexion autour des lieux où nous vivons et que nous nous approprions; la construction urbanistique et sociodémographique; les lieux de mémoire; les lieux en dehors des cartes traditionnelles. Le projet vise à susciter une réflexion créative autour des lieux artistiques et culturels, de ce qu’ils représentent dans le quotidien, ainsi que de ce que la notion de quartier signifie aujourd’hui.

Souleymane Cissé, 1st African filmmaker to win at Cannes, to be
MONTREAL, Aug. 30, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The first African filmmaker to win a prize at the Cannes Festival, the legendary African cinema author Souleymane Cissé, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 7th edition of the Montreal International Black Film Festival on September 27, 2011. This honorary award recognizes his extraordinary contribution to the film industry, especially in the fields of independent filmmaking and African cinema. The MIBFF wants to honour him for his amazing efforts to break down barriers and help create a better understanding of the reality of Black people through his films. The famous writer Dany Laferrière will be presenting him with the award.

There is no better way to say what you want to say than drama! Come learn to use theatre as a way to get your point across easily, while having a blast yourself. The process of working as a theatre artist, the challenge, love, warmth and camaraderie is unforgettable and its effect stellar. History has shown us this repeatedly. Come and get a taste of what all this drama is about!

Theatre as a tool for social change has a long history across the world. This style of theatre teaches us to use our body as our most effective tool and little else to create an impact, which we now know, is unforgettable. The first proponent of this theory – ‘the theatre of the oppressed’- Augusto Boal transformed not just the world of theatre but the world at large. His thoughts, exercises and other tools have been adapted to different contexts by many practitioners across the world.
This workshop will provide information on precisely these theories, its history and give participants a taste of its practice. It will be one that will involve a lot of physical work with some talking in between. This form of theatre is used extensively within student activism on campuses and this workshop will enable students to do the same at Concordia.
**Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both parts of the workshop. Those wishing to be there for part two must have been there for part one as well. Space is limited, please arrive early, and remember to wear comfy clothes you won't mind getting dirty!

Montreal coverage this month
I'd like to see the CKUT tape of the Alternative Days Sunday Aug. 21 morning panel on the site ASAP. This was a stirring panel of 7 presentations that were clear, pragmatic and inspiring on the topic of social movements and the Harper majority government. It should also be transcribed and translated into English so that progressive groups across Canada can benefit from their insights. I'd be willing to help with that.
