On Friday April 1st starting at 2:30pm, Media@McGill invites the public to join us for a free international event (keynote talk and panel discussion) regarding social media and social movements in the Middle East and North Africa. Social Media & Social Movements in the Middle East and North Africa
Abstract: The post-election growth of the 'Green Movement' in Iran seemed a total surprise to many commentators. But serious analysis of the interactions between face-to-face politics and the emergence of new communications technologies in Iran reveals a long history of the up-take of new media and the difficulties of enacting traditional politics. Steering between the extreme positions of both cyber-utopians and cyber-depressives, this talk seeks to explore and illustrate the polymedia environment of young Iranians and the dynamics of Green Movement communication.
Biography:
Annabelle Sreberny is Professor of Global Media and Communications and Director of the Centre for Media and Film Studies at SOAS, University of London, where she also chairs the new Centre for Iranian Studies. She is currently President of IAMCR. Her new book coauthored with Gholam Khiabany, Blogistan:The Internet and Politics in Iran, was just published (2010) by IBTauris.
The event continues with a panel discussion at 3:30pm. Invited experts will explore relationships between social movements and social media in the ongoing major upheavals rocking the Middle-East and North Africa.

Le vendredi 1er avril, à 14h30, Média@McGill invite le public à un événement international gratuit (conférence d'ouverture et table ronde) au sujet des média sociaux et des mouvements sociaux au Moyen Orient et au Maghreb. L'événement aura lieu à Thomson House, 3650 McTavish, Montréal. Les présentations seront en anglais et en français.
Annabelle Srebernyprésentera la conférence d'ouverture : « Social Media and Social Movements: An Exploration of the 'Green Movement' in Iran. » Cette conférence cherche à explorer et à démontrer l'environnement polymédia des jeunes Iraniens et la dynamique de la communication du Mouvement Vert.
Annabelle Sreberny se joindra ensuite à la table ronde avec Fadi Hammoud (journaliste indépendant) et Aziz Salmone Fall (Groupe de recherche d'initiative pour la libération de l'Afrique). Ils examineront les relations entre les mouvements sociaux et les médias sociaux lors des récents bouleversements politiques au Moyen Orient et au Maghreb. Cette table ronde sera modérée par Marc Raboy (Chaire Beaverbrook en éthique, média et communication).
Biographie : Annabelle Sreberny est Professeure des médias et de la communication, ainsi que Directrice du « Centre for Media and Film Studies » à SOAS, Université de Londres, où elle est également chef du nouveau centre pour les études iraniennes. Son nouveau livre, écrit en collaboration avec Gholam Khiabany, Blogistan: The Internet and Politics in Iran, vient de paraître (2010) chez IBTauris. Elle est aussi Présidente de l'IAMCR.
