CKUT's Off the Hour: Pulling Out? France, Canada and the US in Afghanistan

Interview with Raymond Legault, Echec a la Guerre

by Rachel Turpin

CKUT's Off the Hour: Pulling Out? France, Canada and the US in Afghanistan

CKUT spoke with Raymond Legault, spokesperson for the organization Echec a la Guerre, a broad-based anti-war coalition in Montreal. Raymond takes a look back on ten years of fighting and explains why Echec a la Guerre stands firm in their opposition to military intervention in Afghanistan. He also touches on the role of Bin Laden's death in the conflict.

The War in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001, having been launched in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States of America. Ten years later, what conclusions can we draw from the military intervention in Afghanistan?

·                         About 2000 foreign troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001.

·                         This war has caused the deaths of thousands of Afghan civilians

·                         Altogether that comes to 20 000, the number of casualties in that conflict

·                         This war is more and more unpopular: seventy per cent of the French people are opposed to the military intervention in Afghanistan and favor the withdrawal of French forces. Sixty per cent of Americans think it is not worth fighting; fifty-eight per cent of Canadians feel the same.

This interview originally aired on CKUT's Off the Hour on August 26th, 17h-18h
