CKUT Radio: Reflections on political history of community radio

discussion with journalist Samaa Elibyari on political history of community radio from Egypt to Canada.

by Stefan Christoff

Listen to an interview with journalist, community activist and CKUT radio host Samaa Elibyari on the importance of radio in the history of Egypt and the relationship between the Egyptian revolution in 2011 and independent media.

In this interview Samaa speaks about the political history of community radio all around the world but also specifically in Canada and in Montreal at CKUT radio. Samaa hosts a weekly radio program called 'Caravan' which addresses the realities, concerns and perspectives of Montreal's Arab/Muslim community. In the context of North America post 9/11 the program addresses critical current struggles facing the Arab/Muslim community.

Also this interview addresses the role of community radio in supporting and broadcasting voices from international solidarity movements, from the international movement against apartheid in South Africa to the now global campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid policies against the Palestinian people.

In light of the national 'Reclaim your Radio' broadcast via the National Campus/Community Radio Association (NCRA) in Canada, CKUT radio presents this interview with journalist Samaa Elibyari to provide context on the relationship between community radio and social movements.
