Andrea Lee Smith is a Cherokee intellectual, feminist, and anti-violence activist. Her work focuses on issues of violence against women of color and their communities, and Native American women in particular.

Smith is the co-founder of: INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence–a national grassroots organization that engages in direct action and critical dialogue; the Boarding School Healing Project–which seeks to document Native boarding school abuses so that Native communities can begin healing and demand justice; and the Chicago chapter of Women of All Red Nations. The experiences of women of color are central to both her activism and her academic work. She has worked as a rape crisis counselor, has published widely on issues of violence against women of color and is generally considered a leading expert on the topic.

In 2005, Smith was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize “as a woman who works daily for peace” in recognition of her research and work regarding violence against women of color in the US.

Once an assistant professor of American Culture and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan, Andrea Smith is presently an associate professor in the Department of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California.

-Sacred Sites, Sacred Rites (1998)

-Conquest: Sexual Violence and American Indian Genocide (2005)

-Native Americans and the Christian Right: The Gendered Politics of Unlikely Alliances (2008)

Andrea Smith has edited/ co-edited the following anthologies:

-The Color of Violence: The INCITE! Anthology (2006)
-The Revolution Will Not Be Funded: Beyond the Non-Profit Industrial Complex (2007)

Andrea Lee Smith est une intellectuelle Cherokee, féministe et militante anti-violence. Son travail porte principalement sur les questions liées à la violence faite aux femmes de couleur et à leurs communautés, et aux femmes autochtones en particulier.

Smith est la co-fondatrice de INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence (Femmes de couleur opposées à la violence), un organisme de base d’envergure nationale qui prône l’action directe et le dialogue critique (le Boarding School Healing Project) dans le but de documenter tous les abus commis dans les pensionnats autochtones afin que les communautés soient en mesure de guérir et demander justice ; et de la branche de Chicago de Women of All Red Nations. Les expériences des femmes de couleur sont au coeur de son activité militante et de son travail académique. Elle a travaillé en tant que conseillère auprès de victimes d’agressions sexuelles, a publié des travaux portant sur la violence faite aux femmes de couleur et est généralement considérée comme une spécialiste de la question.

En 2005, Smith a été mise en nomination pour le Prix Nobel de la paix, en tant que “femme qui travaille quotidiennement en faveur de la paix”, en reconnaissance pour son travail et ses recherches sur la violence faite aux femmes de couleur aux É.-U.

Anciennement professeure adjointe de Culture américaine et d’Étude de la condition féminine à l’Université du Michigan, Andrea Smith est actuellement professeure agrégé au département d’Études des médias et de la culture à l’Université de Californie.
