Democracy, Civility, & Accountability in Parliament. A Q&A with MP Michael Chong.

What could a more civil Parliament look like? How could our political dialogue be improved? Why are so many Members of Parliament spectators, and not participants?

Come discuss these issues with MP Michael Chong, who has put forward a motion to improve the effectiveness of debate in our nation's Parliament.
...
Date: Tuesday, March 15th
Time: 6:30 - 7:30pm.
Place: McGill University, Political Science Department, 429 Leacock.
Hosted by: Canadians Advocating Political Participation (CAPP) Montreal & the McGill Political Science Student Union.

Backgrounder: In the spring of 2010 MP Michael Chong, Wellington-Halton Hills, moved a private members motion to help fix Question Period. [Question Period is the 45minute daily exchange in Parliament where our elected officials hold the government to account.] The motion, M-517, instructed the standing committee on Procedure & House Affairs to review six specific Question Period reform recommendations and to report back to the House for a final vote. The motion is currently being reviewed by the committee; they have until April 6th to make a final decision.

MP Michael Chong has sparked a national conversation since the fall about civility and representation in Parliament. The Q&A will be an opportunity for Montrealers who care about the health of our national political discourse to learn more about how Parliament actually works and what we can do to help make it better.

The event is free and open to the general public.

With hope in our democracy,

CAPP Montreal
