Ribeiro: Inclusion of soil, agriculture in carbon markets would be devastating

Sivlia Ribeiro of the ETC Group at the Climate Justice Now! press conference on Friday, December 9:

"We won't have any concrete targets or reductions, we won't have any kinds of commitments [at COP17], but other things advancing. For instance, the use of soils and agriculture in carbon markets. This would be devastating for the peasants and small food providers that produce 70 per cent of the food consumed inthe workd.

"What we don't need is that financial speculators come into carbon markets to tell farmers, that have been producing food for most of the planet 10,000 years, how to administrate their own agriculture, their own soil."
